Somatic cell counts and udder health

Somatic cell count, or SCC, is an important udder-health indicator; the cells are predominantly leukocytes. A raised SCC is associated with increased likelihood of infection but does not by itself identify the organism responsible. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

Individual and bulk-tank results

An individual cow SCC of at least 200,000 cells/ml indicates a high likelihood of infection, although a single result can vary. It is not an automatic diagnosis of a pathogen or a treatment instruction. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

Bulk-tank SCC describes the herd, while individual results help identify cows needing further assessment. An improved herd average therefore does not establish that every affected cow has recovered. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

Compare consecutive tests

Repeated results help distinguish new high-SCC cases from persistent ones. This can support assessment of new infections and progress under the herd programme. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

Subclinical mastitis may reduce production without obvious changes in milk. Appropriately collected microbiological samples help investigate the cause alongside the animal’s history. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

Check conditions as well as numbers

Abnormal milk, udder pain or swelling need assessment, especially when accompanied by systemic illness. Severe mastitis may involve fever, loss of appetite or shock. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

Read the mastitis guide. Discuss equipment and housing with AquaBlend and diagnosis or treatment with the herd veterinarian.
