Cows often sort feed at the feed fence, which leads to rumen upsets, acidosis, energy deficit and ketosis. Lower-ranking cows get too little feed. Ketonblend TMR improves palatability and intake for the whole herd.
Cows are in energy deficit in the last weeks before calving and the first weeks of lactation, as NEFA and ketone bodies (BHBA) rise. Milk loss can reach 1.9 kg a day at 1.4 mmol/l BHBA and 3.3 kg a day at 2 mmol/l, about 251 kg over a 305-day lactation. Energy deficit delays ovulation and lowers first-service conception.
